Bad: "3D product website for headphones, let the user rotate the model, modern dark design" Good: "The object sits in a physical space with vertical slats behind it, lit from one side. The camera moves through the room as you scroll, the object never spins. Scrolling walks you around it, it does not turn for you." Rotate on drag is the default and it is why most 3D product sites feel like a catalogue viewer. A spinning object has no location. It floats in nothing. A year of building is learning to give the object a room. Slats, a floor, a single light, something behind it to move against. The moment there is parallax between the object and the background, your brain accepts it as real space. Then tie the camera to scroll, not to the mouse. Scroll is a walk. Drag is a toy.
