THE DIVIDEND MOVED YOUR MONEY Living off dividends can cost you $1,700 of OAS if you’re close to the threshold The number I cut from the video, and it should end the argument on its own. To live on 4 percent of dividends you'd have to go past the high-dividend index entirely. As at late July 2026: XIC, the whole TSX Composite, yields about 2.00 percent. XEQT, globally diversified, about 1.49. XEI, the 75-stock Canadian high-dividend index, only reaches about 3.51. So on $500,000 needing $20,000 a year, a globally diversified portfolio throws off roughly $7,450 of dividends and you sell about $12,550 of shares. Selling isn't the fallback. It's most of the plan, and it always was. One flag before anyone asks. I'm not saying dividends are bad. Two things in the video's favour that the dividend crowd is owed: High-yield stocks are cheap stocks, and cheap stocks have historically earned a premium. A yield tilt is not a zero-expected-return tilt. It's just that yield is the sloppiest of the value measures, and Ben Felix's own work at PWL found dividend yield produced the smallest value premium of the three metrics tested. If you want that premium, buy it deliberately, not by accident in one country and two sectors. And the concentration is worse than people think. Financials and energy are already 47.9 percent of the TSX Composite before you tilt anything. All the telecoms together are 2.0 percent of the index. The behavioural finding underneath all of this is American, and I want to say that clearly. Hartzmark and Solomon, The Dividend Disconnect, Journal of Finance 2019, on 54,176 US brokerage accounts. Their term is the free dividends fallacy. The psychology travels. The tax law doesn't. One correction to something you'll see repeated everywhere: the capital gains inclusion increase was never law. It sat in a Ways and Means Motion from September 2024, got deferred in January 2025 and cancelled in March 2025. The rate has been one half throughout. This decision has tax consequences you can't reverse once you've triggered a gain. Run it with a tax professional before you sell anything.
