@weonaroll: This crab took the bread like it was a hostage exchange, then left with the dignity of a retiring judge. No thank you, no eye contact, just gone. 🦀🍞😂 Ghost crabs are the sprinters of the beach, clocking up to 10 mph and moving around 50 body lengths a second, faster than a cheetah for their size. Their eyes sit on stalks that give almost 360 degree vision, so they saw that hand coming long before it arrived. They spend the day in spiral burrows up to four feet deep and come out at dusk to hunt insects, clams and anything washed ashore. Coastal ecologists use ghost crab numbers as a health check for beaches, because heavy foot traffic and sea walls wipe them out fast.
