I had to have a talk with myself about this once. When I was younger I felt like it wasn’t fair that I wasn’t being selected for any of the scholarships I was applying for. But then I realized that it might have SEEMED unfair to me but it was actually just MORE FAIR to everyone. And then I didn’t feel like such a sour puss

The base assumption that they don’t say out loud (usually) is that women or minorities aren’t as qualified

I had an EMT coworker point to a picture of 45 FFs in an academy class. There was 1 black guy in the class. He literally said, "This guy took my seat" with ZERO knowledge of how the guy tested. When I pointed it out he went OFF that he isn't racist. This was after telling me I'd get in because I'm a black woman. Never mind how insanely more qualified I was than him. SMH. They are insufferable.

This is the part people keep missing. Diversity isn’t just about correcting inequity. It produces better work. When one demographic dominates a field, you also concentrate the experiences, assumptions and blind spots shaping the research, technology and products that field creates. Bringing different people and perspectives into the room exposes things a homogeneous group may never even think to ask. That benefits ALL of us. So having to compete in a broader talent pool after generations of people like you dominating the opportunities isn’t oppression. It’s competition. Welcome to it.
