We know Astra is great at controlling software, but can it use a robot arm? An OpenAI engineer gave Astra access to a robot arm with two cameras holding a paintbrush, and asked it to paint the Golden Gate Bridge in real life. Astra learned how to control the robot and the cameras, and progressively improved through a series of attempts. From Thijs: “It was instructed to plan out 1 minute of actions and monitor it in the background to make adjustments as it goes. After each run (and sometimes during) I’d give it a bit of feed back on how it was doing and sometimes ask it ‘what can you do better?’ And have it update its own instructions. I also gave it a few anchor points, but on future attempts it figured out and adjusted the calibration itself which was so cool to see. Look at it self-calibrate and correct for the error 🤯 And on the debate about art, I feel like this is algorithmic art similar to how a pen plotter is. I don’t see this as replacing artists (certainly doesn’t intend to) because there is a lot more to art than being painted with a brush. the fact that the robot was able to do this shows that it can do so many more things—now people can start experimenting with these 3D printable robots at home and start seeing what they can make/do!”
