I think you’re making this way too situational and treating one possible interpretation as the only meaning behind the phrase. Saying “you’re the reason I’m alive” doesn’t necessarily mean “my life is your responsibility” or that the person is completely dependent on them to stay alive. It could simply mean that someone had a major positive impact on them during an extremely difficult time, or that they helped them when they were struggling. There’s a difference between expressing gratitude toward someone for helping you through something and placing the responsibility for your continued existence entirely on that person. So I understand the concern behind what you’re saying, but I don’t think the phrase automatically carries the harmful meaning you’re assigning to it. Context matters.

This only works when you’re fully healed and not at risk. When you’re fully healed, there is no reason to worry anymore, and it can be taken as gratitude. This is just my personal opinion, so everyone’s boundaries are different.

a better thing to say is “you kept me going when i was in a dark place and i appreciate you for it” or “thank you for helping me when i was in a dark place” thats less manipulative and more grateful as someone who has been in two extremely toxic and manipulative relationships

I currently feel like this. My boyfriend has severe anxiety, depression, and such and he says im the only reason he's still here. I'll admit that I've wanted to break up, but I feel like I can't without something happening, and something always seems to be going wrong when I even dare think to or whenever im having an important day (prom, birthday, graduation, life long dreamed concert)
