I think people are missing the boat here. This amount of investment cannot ever be reproduced so there will never be competitors in our lifetimes. They want a sanctioned duopoly. Duopoly is arguably more powerful and less subject to regulation than a monopoly today. Silicon Valley recognized this awhile ago. Look at Uber/Lyft, iOS/Android, Windows/Mac, Intel/AMD. You actually don’t want to kill your biggest competitor, you just say you do and then make it about humanity and safety.

So, buried in there is him saying "please give us a free pass to work together" from Congress. So they can bypass anti-trust laws. The whole thing feels like a play to get a free pass for anti-trust rules by using scare tactics. We aren't going to stop, so let us work together without being prosecuted. That seems sus. Don't get me wrong, we are running full tilt to being ended by our own creation, but him asking for a free pass seems more like a play than him having a legit fear.

What is the logical end state with AGI? Is it a way for a small company to make trillions? No. The end state doesn’t make money for people and these guys are figuring out that they won’t be able to make money off of an AI product because they will lose control kinda by definition. If they need to stop or slow down they can now. They could do a 90 day halt on all AI research that’s on hardware. That’s actual code running somewhere.

Why do you take him at face value? He could just slow down if he felt like it was really critical. Or he could focus his company on developing AI that explicitly fights against the bad guys, if he actually believes the narrative many think is just a ruse.
