idon’t know what it is about 3am, but my brain becomes a completely different place. During the day I can usually handle things. Baby won’t nap? Fine. Spit-up on the outfit I JUST changed her into? Of course 😂 Haven’t eaten lunch and it’s somehow 3pm? Normal. But 3:09am? Everything feels heavier. That night I was sitting on the nursery floor after getting my baby back down and instead of going to sleep, I just sat there. Phone in my hand. Completely exhausted. But my brain would. not. stop. Was she breathing normally? Did she eat enough? Why has she been waking up more? Am I doing something wrong? Why does everyone else seem better at this than me? And then the worst one: Why am I the only person awake right now? I looked around our dark house and genuinely felt like I was the only mom in the world sitting on a nursery floor trying to keep it together. So I opened this app I’d found recently. And there was this map. Every little yellow dot was another mom awake RIGHT THEN. I looked at the time. 3:12am. And the map was absolutely covered. I just stared at it. Because five minutes earlier, my brain had convinced me that everyone else was peacefully sleeping while I was somehow failing at motherhood alone. Meanwhile there were moms everywhere doing the same shift. One was probably breastfeeding. Another pumping. Another trying to transfer a sleeping baby into the crib without triggering the world’s tiniest motion sensor 😂 Another had probably already been awake three times. Another might’ve been sitting on her own nursery floor wondering if she was the only one too. Then I got three hugs through the app. California. England. Portugal. I don’t know these women. They don’t know me. They didn’t know I was anxious. They didn’t know what kind of night I was having. They just knew another mom was awake. And somehow that was enough. 🥺 It’s hard to explain what happened next because obviously my problems didn’t disappear. My baby didn’t suddenly start sleeping through the night. I didn’t wake my husband up and announce that I had achieved inner peace 😂 I was still tired. But the anxiety wasn’t screaming anymore. Because I had proof that the story my brain was telling me wasn’t true. I wasn’t the only one awake. Not even close. I think that’s the part of postpartum loneliness that’s so hard to explain until you’ve lived it. You can spend your entire day with another human literally attached to your body and still feel completely alone. Especially at night. Sometimes you don’t need someone to fix it. You don’t need advice. You don’t need another sleep tip. You just need another mom somewhere in the world to say: “I’m up too.” 💛 Now when 3am feels impossibly quiet, I think about all those yellow dots. Hundreds of dark houses. Hundreds of tired moms. Hundreds of babies who apparently did not receive the memo that nighttime is for sleeping 😂 We’re all awake. We’re all figuring it out. And none of us are doing this quite as alone as it feels. 💛 #mom #baby #momlife #MomsofTikTok #momtok
