Location: West Dundee and Carpentersville, Illinois Opened: October 1980 Closed: March 22, 2024 Status: Demolished; redevelopment planning underway Developer: Homart Development Original anchors: Sears and Marshall Field’s Spring Hill Mall opened in October 1980 and quickly became one of Fox Valley area's major shopping destination. Built across the boarder of West Dundee and Carpentersville, the mall originally opened with Sears and Marshall Field's as its main anchors. Bergner's and JCPenney joined soon after, and by the late 1980s MainStreet had become Kohl's. For decades, Spring Hill was a familiar suburban mall. Department stores. Holiday shopping. Food court trips. Teenagers meeting friends. Families spending entire afternoons walking the corridors. But like many enclosed malls, Spring Hill began losing ground as shopping habits changed. JCPenney announced its closure in 2011. In an attempt to reinvent part of the property, the former JCPenney wing and food court were demolished. An eight-screen Cinemark opened in 2016, followed by H&M in 2017. The changes weren't enough. Carson's closed in 2018. Sears closed in 2020. Macy's, which had replaced Marshall Field's, also left in 2020. Barnes & Noble relocated in 2021. By then, much of the enclosed mall had become increasingly empty. West Dundee eventually decided that waiting for a private redevelopment was no longer working. Beginning in 2023, the village started buying pieces of the mall property, including the former Sears and Macy's buildings and later the mall's core. On March 22, 2024, the enclosed portion of Spring Hill Mall permanently closed after nearly 44 years. Kohl's remained separately operated for a time, but closed by early 2025. Then the mall itself started disappearing. Large-scale demolition began in May 2025. By the end of that year, most of the enclosed mall had been cleared, leaving the Cinemark theater as the last major operating business from the old mall site. Now Spring Hill is entering another chapter. As of 2026, West Dundee is actively planning a mixed-use redevelopment for the roughly 100-acre property. Concepts presented by the village include housing, retail, resturants, green space, walkable streets, and a new public safety building. A 2024 market study suggested the site could support as many as 1,500 residential units and about 325,000 square feet of commercial space. The final redevelopment plan is still being shaped, but the goal is clear: replace the old enclosed mall with a new town-center-style district built around living, shopping, dining and gathering. Spring Hill Mall is gone. But unlike malls that sit abandoned for decades, its site is already being prepared for what comes next. From a 1980 suburban shopping destination... to a struggling mall... to closure... to demolition... and eventually, an entirely new community. Do you remember Spring Hill Mall? #retailapocalypse #deadmall #deadmalls #urbex #abandonedplaces

When I was a kid, going there with my parents. We would always park at Sears and start our shopping there. I remember JCPenney was still around and when it was gone. That’s when the mall slowly started to go downhill. I loved going there because I would get a Oreo smoothie from this place at the food court, I forgot the name of it. I was disheartening seeing stores disappear little by little. Last time I remember seeing it, Barnes and Noble, and Kohls were still there. Then it was just piles of rubble. It was gone.

Springhill mall was a great mall back in the day. I worked several different stores in that mall from the time it opened. My kids grew up in that mall. I don't think there was a weekend that we didn't go up there to just walk around or shop. 😢

This was my whole childhood. Saw this mall for thought ever phase/remodel got to work there and then even help close up the mall. I knew every back hallway in and out of that mall. And even in the end helped close it down as well. So this was a full circle moment. So this mall will alway has a special place in my heart 👏

man. my heart aches, remembering a lot of my childhood when my dad took us there and we would eat in the big food court where Jc Penney was or the Old Country Buffet, then we'd go to the GameStop to look at what new games there were, we'd go to the Disney store just look around, seeing a lot i grew up around have been demolished, just a very sentimental feeling im having
