I've contemplated posting this but I told you that I would share the good, the bad and the ugly so buckle up because its bad. We took Tucker for his routein 3 month post kidney transplant labs a few weeks ago. We expected everything to be normal and perfect as it has been. Unfortunately, it was not. We learned Tucker has 2 active viruses in his blood stream. One is called EBV (epstein-barr virus) and common childhood virus and the other is called BK virus which is a virus of the kidney. Both are common childhood viruses. 2 viruses we did not want to see pop up. 2 viruses that can cause not only cancer but kidney rejection. 3 words we never wanted to hear: cancer and kidney rejection. What does this mean? Weekly labs to check viral panels and kidney function. Back and forth with the nephroloist to manage symptoms such as swollen tonsils ( we have already been to the ER for this) , swollen lymphnodes, fever, vomiting. The most scariest one of all is taking him off one on of his rejection medications completely. Did you re read that? I know i did.. starting tonight he will only be on 1 rejection med and a steroid thats due to be adjusted down next week. Over the past 3 weeks, EBV has gone up to a level of over 10,000 and his BK level has gone up to over 50,000. How are they treated? By lowering immunosuppression medication, by getting a kidney biopsy to make sure it's not failing. By getting testing done including a CT scan of the abdomin. The biggest one of all is sitting back and waiting to see what his body will do. That's the hardest pill to swallow, how can I sit back and do nothing while these viruses are active in my baby boys body that he has fought so hard to keep healthy? What are the next steps? If his next set on labs show a creatinine level of higher than .4 and/or the viral panels come back higher despite the discontinuation of one of his rejections meds, he will be hospitalized for additional testing, a kidney biopsy and referrals to specialists for potential bone marrow biopsy to make sure he is not developing leukemia. While you say your prayers tonight, please include Tuckers lab work on friday comes back lower than they have been. I know you pray for him already and i feel its serlish of me to ask but I really need God to hear these. He deserves a life cancer and kidney rejection free. #prayer #ebv #bkvirus #fyp #teamtucker
