You know what might actually be keeping you stuck? It may not be your ex. It may be what you’re still waiting to get from them. Think about that. Maybe you don’t even want the relationship back. Deep down, you know it wasn’t good for you. If they called today and said, “Let’s get back together,” you might even know that the right answer is no. So why are you still thinking about them? Maybe because you’re still waiting for something. Maybe you want an apology. Maybe you want them to admit they were wrong. Maybe you want them to finally understand how badly they hurt you. Maybe you want them to regret leaving. Maybe you just want to hear them say, “You didn’t deserve what I did to you.” Here’s the problem. You may never get that. Some people will never apologize. Some people will change the story in their own mind because admitting what they did would require them to take a hard look at themselves. You could spend years waiting for somebody to understand something they have no interest in understanding. Meanwhile, you’re the one paying the price. So maybe the question isn’t, “Do I still love them?” Maybe the better question is, “What am I still waiting to get from them?” Because sometimes THAT is what keeps you connected. You’re waiting for them to tell you that you mattered. You’re waiting for them to admit they took you for granted. You’re waiting for them to finally see your value. I understand why you’d want that. When somebody hurts you, you want them to GET IT. You want them to look back someday and say, “I really hurt somebody who genuinely loved me.” But there’s a big difference between wanting that and needing that. Because if you NEED them to understand what they did before you can have peace, your peace is depending on the person who hurt you. Think about how crazy that is. They may not even be in your life anymore, yet you’re still waiting for them to do something before you can finally let go. Maybe it’s time to take that job away from them. Sometimes the person who hurt you is the worst person to ask to help you heal from what they did. You’re asking the person who confused you to give you clarity. You’re asking the person who hurt you to explain the hurt. Sometimes you’re simply not going to get an answer that makes everything make sense. At some point, the behavior itself becomes the answer. If they lied to you, they lied. If they kept disappearing, they kept disappearing. If they repeatedly disrespected you, they repeatedly disrespected you. You may never understand WHY they did it, but you know that they did it. Our minds don’t like unfinished business. Research on unfinished goals has shown that unresolved things can keep pulling at our attention. Your mind wants an ending. It wants everything tied up neatly. Unfortunately, relationships don’t always end neatly. Sometimes there’s no apology. Sometimes there’s no explanation. Sometimes you never hear, “I was wrong.” But an unanswered question doesn’t have to become a lifelong assignment. Maybe someday they WILL apologize. Maybe someday they’ll realize what they lost. Maybe someday they’ll finally understand. Fine. Let them. You don’t have to sit in the waiting room until they finally wake up and get there. So ask yourself: What am I still waiting to get from them? An apology? An explanation? Regret? Proof that you mattered? Then ask yourself the harder question: Do I really need them to give it to me? Because sometimes the final thing tying you to somebody isn’t love. It’s the belief that they still owe you something before you’re allowed to move on. Maybe they do owe you an apology. Maybe they should recognize what they lost. But they don’t have to do either one for you to get your life back.
