@dr.chad.md: Schizophrenia is a complex psychiatric disorder that affects how a person thinks, perceives reality, and processes information. But what causes it? 🧠 There isn’t one single cause. Schizophrenia likely results from a combination of genetic, brain, and environmental factors. Major risk factors include: • 🧬 Genetics: Having a close relative with schizophrenia increases risk, although most people with a family history do not develop it. • 🧠 Brain development: Differences in brain structure, connectivity, and neurotransmitter signaling—particularly dopamine—have been associated with schizophrenia. • 🤰 Prenatal/perinatal factors: Certain infections, malnutrition, complications during pregnancy or birth, and other developmental factors may increase risk. • 🌎 Environmental stressors: Childhood trauma, chronic stress, social adversity, and other significant environmental exposures may contribute. • 🍃 Substance use: Cannabis, particularly frequent or high-potency use during adolescence, is associated with an increased risk of psychosis and schizophrenia. • 👨🦱 Age and sex: Schizophrenia typically emerges in late adolescence or early adulthood, with differences in typical age of onset between males and females. Importantly, having a risk factor does not mean someone will develop schizophrenia, and schizophrenia is not caused by a lack of willpower, poor parenting, or a personal failure. #Schizophrenia #MentalHealth #Psychiatry #Neuroscience #MedicalEducation
