Nice to see some analysis from outside the industry that doesn't lean heavily into the fear aspect for clicks! My guess is there's no actual business model that makes the labs work (at their massive valuations) if open weight models are "good enough," and this leaning into safety is a way to get open weight models regulated out of existence in America. Kind of the AI equivalent of a 100% tariff on Chinese vehicles

This is all spin for the IPO imho. The challenges for Dario et al is that age old tech business issue "how do we make money from this invention". James Watt stalled the development of steam engines for 25 years from 1775 to 1800 using exclusive patents. Also the UK only allowed cars on the road with a man holding a red flag from 1865 to 1896.
