Many parents today have unfortunately made fluent English a measure of intelligence. If their child speaks English with a foreign accent, they immediately feel the child is “brilliant.” But let’s be honest, speaking English fluently is not proof of intelligence. What level of education did you attain that made you believe speaking Yorùbá is beneath you? What exactly did you achieve that should make you abandon your language, your culture, and the respect traditionally given to elders? I know people who have travelled the world, earned degrees, built successful careers and acquired wealth, yet they have never allowed success to make them ashamed of where they come from. They speak their language proudly. They honour their elders. They carry their culture with dignity. But here, someone gets one degree and suddenly starts forcing themselves to become British. 😏 Education should broaden your mind, not erase your identity. Learning English is an advantage. Speaking other languages is beautiful. But forgetting Yorùbá because you want to sound “educated” is not sophistication, it is a loss of identity. Teach your children English, yes. Give them access to the world, absolutely. But teach them Yorùbá too. Let them know their names, their history, their greetings, their proverbs, their traditions and most importantly, where they come from. You can be globally relevant without becoming culturally empty. Knowledge should never destroy culture. OLAMIDE ADEMOLA OSEYIFUNMI 🖊️ #culturaladvocacy #reels #yoruba #explore #oseyifunmialarofo
