As a Nigerian immigrant I totally understand. There’s this unspoken feeling and level of entitlement I do not think is healthy for parents to put on their children. Sometimes distance is needed. They will eventually come to an understanding and hopefully a new respect and boundary!

When you have kids, she’ll come around. She wants the best for you and unfortunately at this point thinks she still knows best. But again, once grandkids come in the picture, she’ll put all that away..for the most part. I’ve seen it happen multiple times so hoping that’ll be the same for you and your situation.

Sometimes family is just the fkd up weirdos you got stuck with. But a spouse is the person you choose to build a life with. I’ve cut off a couple family members for coming at me and my husband sideways. We are happy and successful and in love, while they are still gossiping about us in their toxic group chats. It’s a tough choice you have to make, but so worth it.

I totally relate. Going into my 7th year of no contact. Coming from a Mexican background, I understand the lack of boundaries all too well. I was the golden child until I realized the relationship no longer served me or my family, especially when the disrespect reached my husband, who did nothing wrong. It sucks, but once you see it, you can’t unsee it. We chose to break the generational curse, and that’s such a privilege for our future generations. ❤️🩹❤️🩹
