@bry1022001: Needles Highway PT2 You are about to experience one of the most stunning stretches of road in the American West, paired with a truly iconic morning view. As you pass Mount Rushmore in the morning light, the rising sun hits the east-facing granite faces of Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln, making the monument pop brilliantly against the dark green pines of the Black Hills. Right after taking that in, you'll drop into the masterpiece of engineering that is Needles Highway (South Dakota Highway 87). This road is famous for its razor-sharp granite spires—the "needles"—that seem to pierce the sky, and its incredible pigtail bridges, which are ingenious wooden spirals that loop back over themselves as you climb and descend. Keep an eye out for the Eye of the Needle, a massive rock formation with a narrow natural arch you'll drive right through, and prepare to inch through some remarkably tight, hand-carved single-lane granite tunnels that frame distant views of the valley like postcards.
