@explainingourpast: Enchanted Rock looks like an ancient volcano rising out of the Texas Hill Country—but that isn’t how it formed. 🪨 Nearly 1 BILLION years ago, this pink granite began as molten rock roughly 7 miles beneath the surface. It cooled slowly underground, while hundreds of millions of years of weathering and erosion gradually stripped away the rock above it and exposed the massive dome we see today. And it’s still changing. Enchanted Rock is an “exfoliation dome,” meaning pressure release causes curved outer layers of granite to slowly crack and peel away almost like layers of an onion. The main dome rises about 425 feet above its base and covers roughly 640 acres. People have also been coming to this landscape for thousands of years—evidence of human activity here goes back around 12,000 years. Texas has some seriously wild geology hiding in plain sight. 🌎 #EnchantedRock #TexasHillCountry #GeologyTok #TexasTravel #Geology
