I once saw a video where Willie Nelson and the other members of the highwaymen discussed politics. Kris Kristofferson spoke against political conformity, "choreographed patriotism" and a media environment that he felt pushed government propaganda. Johnny Cash argued that national priorities were misaligned, pointing out that too much money was funneled into the military and war machine while education, children, the elderly, and social programs were underfunded. He added that despite its flaws, loving America meant taking responsibility to help fix it. After 911 country became more nationalistic and patriotic. The polar opposite of what the highway had discussed.

I felt so helpless watching 9/11 live at home that I went into the medical field to help people and not feel helpless anymore. I have now worked and taught in medicine for 20 years now. It really did change a lot of millenials trajectories.
