@ryan.mergener: Active recall is hard but it is your cheat code! Do the Anki, do the practice questions, teach your peers without notes. i think it’s insane bc i built SUCH good study skills in college and didn’t even realize, i just was “optimizing studying” and figured out if i reread notes once, then write out important points once. reread that once. make a quiz from it. take the quiz the next day once. make flashcards of what i got wrong. boom. this whole process is only a couple hours

Best studying method I used in college was study for an hour. Go do something else for 2 hours like exercise, play a video game than write a summary about what your read hours ago if you can recall it means that it stuck with you.

Any recommendations for someone who learns best by hand writing everything? If I hand write and then do active recall I score anywhere from 10-15 points higher on exams and retain it. If I only read and watch videos and do active recall, it doesn’t stick as well. But, I just don’t have time this semester to hand write everything. Does anyone have any suggestions?!

Yessss! Thea helps me study with active recall but I have like a routine where I skim the text by briefly reading it then I’ll watch lectures and that’s where I take my in depth notes then I usually do homework and wrote down the practice questions and answers so I have to slow down and read comprehend it and store it so then when I come across the questions again I can actively recall the answer by slowing down and thinking then retrieving the answer then I just practice again with Thea to see where my strong and weak shirts are and try my best to learn what I’m struggling in then I just full send and hope for the best lmao so far it’s worked so well with my studying schedule especially in the science heavy classes

I tell my nursing students this constantly. You have to be able to pull it from your brain. I think the best way to practice active recall is to teach others about what you learned as much as possible.

Best learning technique is teaching. Get a study partner and pick a topic and teach each other what u know outloud.

What do you call rewriting notes by hand until you can write all the notes without looking at them. lol

Works for surgeons. Watch one, do one, TEACH one. But teaching to saying it out-loud to someone else helps it sticks. Also, knowing ahead of time that you’re going to be teaching the material helps it stick too.

Thanks for sharing. I have passed this on to my two college students. I’m a DDS and I found that this was helpful for me as well. I also converted the information into learning tools and use creativity to learn. Drawings, flow charts, dichotomous keys, etc.

I am doing active recall and of course any time i actually do way better then if i studied any other way but the problem is im stuck at 70s/80s ? Maybe im not doing it enough? It was really only a problem with A&P but microbio seems easier tbh

Okay but what if it’s a lot of information in a short amount of time? We had a different lecture each day (4-5 hrs each) and an exam the following monday. There is a ton of reading in the books along with powerpoint lectures. How do you actively recall all of that😂

I’d also say, the more you relate new information to old information, the more you can UNDERSTAND what you’re learning. Regurgitation does not mean learning.
