As a PCP, it doesn’t make the field more attractive to medical students when the system equates physicians, NPs, and PAs as “providers.” Make primary care more financially attractive, stop dumping on us, and stop equating NP and PA training to physician training.

Primary care is a dying field. 500k in medical school loans. Few years of residency making minimum wage while interest accumulates to ultimately make $200k. It’s not financially viable.

to all the comments suggesting this….the solution to the physician shortage is not more PAs/NPs. it is more physicians- how we get there is what is in question.

my dad is a physician. he has said that insurance companies have absolutely ruined the profession and medicine is jsut no longer the same as it was

Small correction: residency is required to become a board certified specialists. Only intern year and completion of the 3 Step or Comlex exams is required to be a licensed physician. Next year I will be a licensed physician and eligible to work with minimal supervision for things like moonlighting. But I won’t be a board certified pediatrician and psychiatrist until I complete residency and pass those specialty specific exams.

Residents are the bulk of the physician workforce at most hospitals, they are treated as cheap labor. Imagine finishing medical school and have to work for 5-7 years for 60,000 when you have more in loans than most people have in their houses.

It cost over $300000 to go to Med school. Doctors don’t make as much as they used to because of private equity ownership of hospitals and their lack of pay and push to go faster.

My friend is a PCP and is forced to see her patients in 20 minutes for returning patients and 30 for new patients because of insurance and hospital system greed. She’s exhausted - is unsustainable and unrealistic

Medical school is crazy expensive and loans are now capped. Even if someone has incredible grades, even with scholarships, they may not be able to afford to go to med school

You can’t solve the rural physician shortage without addressing rural hospital economics. A physician isn’t likely to build a career somewhere if the local hospital is financially unstable, the OB unit is closing, call coverage is impossible and their spouse can’t find employment. That’s not a physician supply problem. That’s an ecosystem problem. There’s also a powerful economic distortion nobody should ignore We tell medical students America desperately needs primary-care physicians. Then our payment system tells them something completely different.

Increase physician compensation. Decrease the cost of medical school. You can’t be a fan of capitalism or a meritocracy then make the argument that physicians should spend over a decade of their life learning and training and their reward is to be buried in debt

To even get into med school you have to do a ton of extras - clinical hours, hands on with patients, research, shadowing etc and that has to start freshman year. It’s insanely difficult to get into med school in tgr first place and then to take $200-300k in loans is mind blowing. Yet that’s what my hs senior wants. We’ll see

Not only do we need to make primary care more attractive for docs but we need to make it sustainable. 9 PCPs were fired in my town and replaced with NPs and PAs. These corporations are ruining our healthcare system because they know they can make more profits by cutting costs by getting rid of MDs in their system
