The locomotive of the regular Kyiv–Warsaw passenger service was hit near Yahodyn in Ukraine’s Volyn region, about two kilometers from Polish territory. More than 200 passengers were reportedly evacuated before the strike, and no injuries were reported. Johnson and Bildt were returning from the Yalta European Strategy conference in Kyiv alongside diplomats, German lawmakers and European security advisers. Their diplomatic train departed Yahodyn ahead of schedule and was only minutes in front of the train that was struck. Ukraine’s state railway company said it was “highly probable” that the diplomatic train was the intended target, although this has not been independently confirmed. Another train carrying former CIA director David Petraeus was reportedly still at Yahodyn station when the attack occurred. In a separate attack, a Russian drone struck near the Yahodyn–Dorohusk border crossing, setting fire to a petrol station and several trucks roughly 800 meters from Poland. The crossing was temporarily closed before operations resumed. Russia’s Defense Ministry said it targeted railway infrastructure in western Ukraine used to transport military cargo from Europe. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the strikes as Russian “terror” reaching the doorstep of the European Union and NATO. Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski called the attacks an escalation, while Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned that intensifying Russian operations could eventually affect Polish territory.
