I’m 30 married and pregnant. My father in law just helped me buy a car for myself….. like went to the dealership with me. Negotiated on my behalf and then I paid for it. He isn’t my parent and I have never bought a car before… he came to make sure I didn’t get taken advantage of and the price was far and the car wasn’t a lemon. He made sure I didn’t fail at a new thing. At 30 married and with a child on the way….. I’m not even his blood.

I once told my mom I hate her. She gave me space, forgave me and accepted my apology once I realized I was wrong, and then showed me how to better handle my big emotions going forward without lashing out at other people. It was red light green light like you described and it’s called good parenting!

my daughter is 13 and I just sit around waiting for her to come find me. my husband just taught her how to use the griddle to make pancakes. I'm not setting her up for failure, she will know she can do it all by herself.

The daughter had pretty common questions I thought, she did a lot of the work and just needed a little help with the next steps 🤷🏻‍♀️i still ask my parents questions about stuff I haven’t experienced yet. I feel comfortable asking them and I hope my kids feel that way when they have questions.

Thank you very much! My son is now 19 and everyone thought I was wrong for raising my son this way. He’s independent, but if ever he needs his parents, we will be there to help him with the issue he needs us for.

as a parent your goal should be to get your child to where they don’t need you all the time. But when they do need you they should know that you are there. You might not have all the answers but the both of you with figure it out

Can we just break that down: “I’m not a mom here for you when it’s convenient for you.” HUH?? HOW does one even GET there?? That might be more dysfunctional than Olivia Soprano 💀

“You are supposed to make their life more convenient” SAY IT LOUDER bc that kid did NOT choose to be dragged into this world, especially not to parents )who chose to have them) to see them, the kid THEY wanted enough to bring into life, as a burden 😐

The amount of people who just show that they had kids for purely narcissistic reasons and then seems absolutely *shocked* that they did infact birth a human being that requires being taught things, and raised and nutured instead of just a life sized doll they get to dress up and play with until they get bored never ceases to amaze me.

You know what my biggest question is when I see a true crime potcast, or true crime video, where the child or young adult can't quite cut it in the world on their own, and end up on the street, and perhaps get murdered... My biggest question is why wasn't going home an option? Why wasn't asking parents for help an option? These people just answered my question. May I NEVER make my own children feel unwelcome, to ask me for advice or help. I don't care how snarky they get, or how old they get, or how many dumb sh*t's on the Internet tel me "oh you're coddling" I will ALWAYS be there for my children!

Today, my teenage son asked me how I would feel when he eventually left home. I told him I would feel proud knowing that he was ready to build his own life and could be happy wherever he went. To me, that would mean I had done a good job as his mother. I told him that when the time came, he should feel free to leave, explore the world, and follow his own path without feeling guilty or worrying about me. Seeing him become a good person and live a happy life would always make me happy. Growing up and discovering the world are part of life. I also reminded him that if he ever needed anything, he could always call me, and I would be there for him. I never want him to feel responsible for me—I only want him to know that he will always have my love and support.
