I was at TJ Maxx the other day buying a bunch of new things for our little puppy, Lulu. 🐾 When I got to the register, the cashier started commenting on how cute all of the little outfits were. She picked up one of them and told me she had actually bought that exact same outfit for her puppy. She asked what kind of dog I had, and I told her she was a mini Goldendoodle. Naturally, I asked her what kind of dog she had. Her expression changed, and she said, “Oh, my dog has been gone for a while now. I’ve really been wanting to get another one, but part of me feels like I’d be betraying them by moving on. Like maybe it’s too soon.” And I understood exactly what she meant because I used to think the same way. Losing a pet can leave such a massive hole in your heart that the thought of loving another one almost feels wrong. You wonder, Am I replacing them? Am I moving on too quickly? Does getting another dog somehow mean that what we had wasn’t as special as I thought it was? But my entire perspective around our pets has changed after my conversations with God. So I looked at her and said, “I completely understand why you feel that way, but I want you to know—they want you to be happy. Where they are now is paradise. They don’t want to see you sad or feel like you have to stop loving because they’re no longer physically here. And how do you know they aren’t the one sending you the next little love of your life?” She smiled and said, “Thank you so much. Maybe this was my sign to finally go get that puppy.” And I said, “I think it was.” I walked away from that interaction thinking about how differently I see all of this now. You are not betraying the pet you lost by loving another one. You are not replacing them. Love doesn’t work that way. The love you shared with them will always belong to the two of you. Nothing can take its place. But that doesn’t mean your heart has to close when they leave. Maybe part of their love for you is wanting your heart to open again. And maybe—just maybe—the little soul that comes into your life next was sent with a little help from the one you’ve been missing. 🤍 I wanted to share this because I’m currently working on my next book, How to Heal From a Broken Heart, and one of the most powerful chapters came from what Jesus spoke to me about losing our animals and the heartbreak that follows. It completely changed the way I look at pet loss, grief, and loving another animal after saying goodbye. So if you’ve been asking yourself whether it’s okay to open your heart to another pet, maybe you needed to hear this today too. It doesn’t mean you’re moving on from them. It simply means you’re allowing the love they taught you to keep moving through you. 🐾🤍
