@the_30_rule: Manager table touches are supposed to add value. Most of them subtract it. You have seen it. The manager walks up mid bite. How is everything tasting tonight? The guest says good, mouth full, waiting for it to be over. Manager says great, enjoy, and moves to the next table. Twelve seconds. Zero value. Everybody a little more uncomfortable than before. That is not a manager problem. That is a training problem. Because you trained the what. Touch every table. Hit the whole section. You put it on a checklist and measured whether it happened. You never trained the how. And you definitely never trained the why. So now it is a task getting completed on top of a guest who did not ask for it. Here is what a real table touch is. It is not a survey. It is not quality control. It is a chance to make the guest feel like somebody who runs this place actually saw them. Which changes everything about how you do it. You read the table before you approach. Mid conversation? Come back. Mouths full? Come back. Kid melting down? Help instead of chat. You lead with something real instead of a stock line. You notice the occasion. You mention the dish they picked. You ask something only a person would ask. And you stop all the way. Shoulders square, present for a few seconds, not already scanning the room. Then you actually do something with what you learn. A comment about the temperature of the room gets fixed before you walk away. That is the difference between a scripted touch and a moment they remember. So train the why first. Every time. A manager who understands the purpose will find their own words and it will land. A manager handed a phrase will say it flat and the guest will feel it. Build it into your hospitality training. Build it into your restaurant leadership development. Put it in your restaurant systems so it survives a bad night. Do that and the table touch stops being a box you check and becomes the reason they come back. #hospitalitytraining #restaurantleadership #restaurantsystems #restaurantowner
As a retired server, I love seeing managers on the floor. Bussing when slammed, carrying food, seating and generally a hands-on approach. No need to 'table touch' when the manager is visible.

Texas Roadhouse does this and it feels like they are reading from a script. Awkward

The easiest way to table touch as a manager is to be giving them something they need. If you see they need refills talk to the server so you can do it. Or drop off the ketchup. Or the extra bread. That’s a necessary interaction that gives you an in

I know Texas Roadhouse has been embroiled in controversy lately, but as a former regular at the bar space, there was ALWAYS a table touch that felt genuine. The manager helped bus the area, checked back in with guests, and asked the staff how can I help. That’s a real (feeling) and well taught skill that a lot of restaurant managers don’t have.

I guess I’m the only person here who isn’t a Karen. I don’t mind if the manager drops by. I don’t think it’s awkward.

I managed a restaurant very briefly after being a server for 10 years and when I was supposed to “touch” a table I would bring a side of ranch with me. 9/100 times somebody needed it and it enhanced the value.

I much prefer a manager just walking through to see how things are going than having to force this onto patrons.

Bring bread, drink refills, or chips. Don't just interrupt for no reason, it's annoying.

Yeah that was uncomfortable. I want to eat in peace, not engage in a conversation with the manager.

As someone who worked in restaurants for 25 years and dines out often, unless there’s an issue please let’s just do away with the table touches. It’s annoying and awkward. It doesn’t add any value.

How about just give tables a button connected to a service light that lets servers know we need something? Like how planes have flight attendant lights.
