![A few years ago, @Mastodon played an intimate hometown tour warmup as “Big Hairy Elephant.” This weekend, they did it again, this time with surprise guest John Baizley. The Baroness frontman previously joined Mastodon onstage in 2010, and it turns out his appearance Friday wasn’t a one-off: the fellow Georgia metal great will be joining Mastodon on their Poisonous Weapons Tour with Deafheaven and Alcest, kicking off in Orlando on Wednesday. At Atlanta’s the Earl, Mastodon performed some cuts from new album ‘Marrow Deep’ live for the first time, then brought out Baizley for six songs, some of which they hadn’t played in many years. “We’re really excited to bring this special set on the tour,” Mastodon posted after the show. “It’s going to epic!” Earlier this month, the estate of late Mastodon co-founder Brent Hinds sued the band, claiming that “its members never bought the guitarist out of his share of the band and its related businesses before his death, and that, despite the acrimony while Hinds was still alive, they used an image of his face on an album cover after he died, cashing in on the tragedy,” ‘The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’ reports. The estate is seeking compensation for the use of Hinds’ likeness and for his share in the business. “We strongly deny allegations of ill intent on our part and intend to vigorously defend what we believe is a meritless lawsuit,” Mastodon responded in a statement. “We don’t intend to speak publicly on this going forward, as we feel this wouldn’t honor Brent’s memory or the legacy of his musical gifts.” [📹: Matt Landrum]
