Mind you Hal has fought aliens in hand to hand combat without his ring and won they literally make them go through trials and tribulations without their rings I would think that a 60 year old Hal would be far above athletic young people

This is exactly what Sinestro does in the comics with Prohl Gosgotha, he steals the ring from a lantern on the floor dying then lets the green lantern die and doesn't save them... exactly like this, is this supposed to foreshadow John becoming corrupted into a yellow lantern?
