Kari Sims is breathing on her own now, through her trach, fever gone, and doctors say the resistant pneumonia that's plagued her recovery appears to be improving after a change in antibiotics. It's a real shift from just days ago, when mucus kept blocking her tubes and required constant suctioning. She still can't speak while her breathing improves and her trach heals, so she's been writing on an erasable board. This week, she wrote something that stopped her grandmother, Vicki, in her tracks. "Mimi I remember it all." Vicki isn't sure exactly what Kari meant, and isn't guessing. After everything Kari has endured since being struck and pinned beneath a car in August, broken legs, a shattered pelvis, severe burns, surgeries, a ventilator, repeated infections, the words on that board carried weight on their own. On August 30th, Kari coughed so violently her trach came completely out, and she coded. "But the Lord brought her back to us," Vicki said. The fight isn't over. She's still battling severe C. diff and another infection. Her legs cause significant pain, and she's developed drop foot in her right foot, now requiring a special boot as therapists work with her arms, hands and feet. Her family is still searching for a rehabilitation facility willing to accept her. But the last couple of days have brought real signs of her coming back. She's watched some television.
