Mount Mitchell became North Carolina’s first state park in 1915, protecting the highest point east of the Mississippi River and the unique, high elevation forests surrounding it. Two organizations that have helped make this place what it is today: NC State Parks and Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy (SAHC). 🌲⛰️ @SAHC @North Carolina State Parks At 6,684 feet, standing on the summit of Mount Mitchell feels a little surreal, but there are more than 40 miles of trails that you can do around the park. Trails to explore during your visit: Balsam Nature Loop ↠ 0.7-mile loop through high-elevation spruce-fir forest Campground Trail ↠ 0.4 miles Commissary Trail ↠ 2 miles one way Old Mitchell Trail ↠ 2 miles one way Camp Alice Trail ↠ 0.5 miles one way, strenuous Mount Mitchell Trail ↠ 5.6 miles one way, strenuous Black Mountain Crest Trail / Deep Gap ↠ 11.3 miles one way along the high ridgeline Mountains-to-Sea State Trail ↠ 22.9 miles through the Black Mountains Hiking isn’t the only reason to visit. You can walk out to the summit observation deck, visit the Mount Mitchell Museum, explore the Fraser fir forest, picnic, birdwatch, or spend the night at the campground. Dogs are welcome on the park’s trails as long as they’re on a leash. SAHC has played a major role in preserving the landscape around Mount Mitchell through habitat management, ongoing scientific research, and protecting nearly 10,000 undeveloped acres. Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy and NC State Parks work closely together to steward one of the state's most stunning and rare landscapes. It’s a pretty incredible reminder that protecting these mountains means protecting the experience of being able to stand here generations from now. Always check current trail and road conditions before visiting! High elevation weather can change quickly, and some facilities/trails are seasonal or subject to closures.
