When 15-year-old Abena entered Yaa Asantewaa SHS, she promised her mother that she would make the most of her three years. She was intelligent, hardworking and quiet. Her dream was to become a doctor, and during her first term, she quickly became one of the best students in her class. But everything changed when a new teacher, Mrs. Darko, took over their class. From the first lesson, Mrs. Darko seemed to dislike Abena. “Stand up,” she ordered one morning. Abena stood. “You think because you are intelligent, you are better than everyone?” “No, Madam,” Abena replied nervously. “Then stop behaving like you are.” From that day, Abena felt as though she could never do anything right. Everyone congratulated her. Everyone except Mrs. Darko. The teacher looked at the paper and said coldly, “This cannot be your real work.” The classroom became silent. Abena's eyes filled with tears. That evening, she sat alone outside the dormitory, staring at her examination paper. For the first time, she wondered whether she should give up. But she remembered her mother's words: “People may doubt you, but don't become the person who doubts yourself.” Abena returned to class the next day with a different attitude. She stopped trying to win Mrs. Darko's approval. She simply focused on learning. Months passed. At the end-of-year academic awards, Abena received the school's top academic prize. The hall erupted in applause. As she walked to the stage, she noticed Mrs. Darko sitting quietly among the teachers. For a moment, their eyes met. Abena expected bitterness. Instead, Mrs. Darko stood and applauded. After the ceremony, she approached Abena. “I owe you an apology,” she said. Abena was surprised. “I was harder on you than I should have been. I thought pressure would make you stronger, but I didn't realize how much it was hurting you.” Abena nodded. “I was hurt, Madam. But I didn't give up.” Mrs. Darko smiled. “And that's what makes you strong.” Years later, Abena returned to the school as a successful doctor. She walked past the classroom where she had once cried and smiled.
