Good evening to my fellow people of West Pokot County and Pokot at large. I would like to share an observation and an appeal following my attendance at the Karamojong Cultural Festival in Moroto, Uganda, where I participated for two days. The festival lasted for five days, from Sunday to Saturday, and it was truly an impressive and exciting event. What impressed me most was the economic impact of the festival on Moroto. During those few days, a lot of business activities took place, and significant amounts of money were spent within Moroto. Hotels, restaurants, transport operators, traders, cultural groups, and many other businesses benefited. In a short period, the local economy was given a major boost. Secondly, I was impressed by how the Karamojong people continue to celebrate, preserve, and promote their culture with pride. It made me ask myself: What about us, the Pokot? I would therefore like to appeal to our leaders, led by our Governor, our elders, cultural leaders, business community, and other stakeholders to seriously consider establishing a Pokot Cultural Day or Pokot Cultural Festival here in West Pokot County. We should have our own annual cultural event lasting perhaps 2–5 days, where we can showcase and celebrate our Pokot culture, traditions, music, dances, food, traditional knowledge, art, clothing, and other aspects of our heritage. Most importantly, such an event should be held within West Pokot County, rather than taking our cultural celebrations and the economic opportunities they create to other counties. I also appeal to the sponsors and pioneers of Pokot Fest to consider bringing the celebration home to West Pokot. By doing so, we will not only promote and preserve our culture as the Pokot people, but we will also promote our local economy and create opportunities for our people. I remember that during the early years of devolution, we had Pokot Night, which was a good initiative. Unfortunately, it eventually disappeared, perhaps because of small criticisms and challenges that could have been addressed through improvements rather than abandoning the idea altogether. We should learn from our neighbours. We see the Toping'loru cultural celebrations among the Turkana and the Karamojong Cultural Festival in Moroto, among others. These communities are using culture not only to preserve their identity but also to promote tourism, business, unity, and economic development. Why can't we do the same? Let us not always wait to travel to other places to celebrate other people's cultures while our own culture and economy remain behind. I am therefore appealing to our leaders, especially our Governor, Members of County Assembly, elders, cultural leaders, business community, sponsors, and all Pokot stakeholders, to come together and establish an annual POKOT CULTURAL DAY/FESTIVAL here in West Pokot. This is not about politics. It is about our identity, our culture, our unity, our heritage, and our economy. Let us make it a reality. Tusiende tu kwenye sherehe za watu wengine kila wakati—tujenge sherehe yetu, tusherehekee utamaduni wetu, na tuweke pesa na opportunities ndani ya West Pokot. It is time for Pokot Cultural Day in West Pokot County. Pokot culture, Pokot unity, Pokot economy.
