We pay early and pay like $25-50 extra a month whatever we can afford and it helps so much even that little bit extra.

Usually car loans are based on an amortization schedule. Paying a month early would reduce simple interest, but it would be a negligible amount. I would suggest verifying they didn’t take it as an out of cycle interest only payment and make sure you don’t still have a regular payment due on your due date.

if your financial situation is better now-- consider refinancing (with the same amount of time you have left on your loan now) to save a little money, especially if you belong to a credit union, they are just easier to work with

You don’t know until you learn it I’m 60 and I feel like I know a lot but it’s only because I’ve lived 60 years on this planet. Don’t feel bad now you know. If you ever have extra money at the time of your payment, just go ahead and put the extra money on the principal.
