Yuji’s grandfather saying that he “cursed” Yuji to save everyone is another example of a hyperbole. When Mai said “destroy everything,” she meant the system that abused her and Maki, and those who aided the system.

Also it contradicts her own morals, why would she kill innocent children when she has empathy for the victims of the clans abuse, and why would she leave megumi alive when he was head of the zenin clan. She’s not some monster. The only exception to the only combatants she killed were her mother, her mother was a active enabler and despite being a heavily oppressed victim of the clan she never protected her children and even led them to ogi who intended to execute both of them. Before maki attacked she asked her mother why she had told her to come back right before she went to the armory. She was trying to see if her mother had did it out of genuine love to protect her daughters from the trap, but traumatized and bound by the clan’s mindset she denied it and lied that she didn’t know why. After seeing she chose her allegiance to the clan rather than her own daughters was when maki accepted her as part of the system and killed her. But even though maki slit her throat her mother didn’t die immediately, which is why in her final moments, freed from the psychological shackles, she used a kitchen knife to kill naoya finally taking revenge for her daughters instead of only watching. Then she passed away thinking about how she realized that she was so glad she gave birth to them.
