@mordecaimuriisa: Well, ladies and gentlemen, it now appears there may have been much more behind Andrew Mwenda’s furious attack on Queen Mother Best Kemigisa than he let on. According to reports emerging from the Tooro succession saga, there was a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the succession committee and the central government that reportedly provided for no succession rituals to be conducted during King Oyo’s burial. If that understanding was indeed in place, then the controversy takes a completely different turn. During burial embers of the succession camp wanted to proceed with traditional succession rituals during the burial, but Queen Mother Best Kemigisa objected. And according to the account being circulated, the announcement by Omusuuga of Kijanangoma as Oyo’s successor during the church service was therefore contrary to the earlier understanding. That raises a very uncomfortable question: Was the Queen Mother really the problem or was she simply insisting that an agreement be respected? Suddenly, Mwenda’s furious social-media campaign against Best Kemigisa looks very different. Why was he so quick to attack her? Why was the narrative immediately turned against the grieving Queen Mother? And was the public being given the full story? If the MOU existed as reported, then the real controversy may not be Queen Mother Kemigisa’s refusal but the attempt to do something she believed had already been ruled out. Of course, the details of the MOU and exactly what was agreed should be established from the actual document and the parties who signed it. But one thing is clear: The Tooro succession drama may have another layer that the public has not been told about. And that makes Mwenda’s explosive attack on the Queen Mother even more intriguing.
