This is something I encounter frequently with clients. Someone (typically from the family of origin or the chosen family) wants answers and atonement for whatever happened during active addiction. And they want it now. Or, they want to offer free and unsolicited advice (the best kind 😑). There is definitely a social epidemic of dehumanizing folks in active addiction or in recovery. This epidemic of perspective is NOT improving the addiction epidemic. Yes, the days when they were in active addiction were challenging. Yes, reparations need to be made. Yes, there is a step for that. But also no, you don’t get to decide when the person in recovery is going to be ready to take that step.
