The economy used to be so good that when my parents were my age, as a high school dropout, and somebody who started and quit college after a semester, both working part-time, one at sandwich shop and the other at a company that developed high school yearbook photos, my parents had a house, two cars, and three fucking kids. I went to college, and got a degree. I’m a teacher. I don’t have a car. I live in a rented house with two roommates, and I have no children. I live paycheck to paycheck. Make it make fucking sense.

Side note that’s also why the older generations are so critical of us and call us lazy when we don’t have certain things because we can’t afford them. Being better off was so easy back then that for you to be broke you would have to fuck up really bad or simply just be a bum
