The Heart of Two Sons This concept has tremendous depth because the parable is not merely about one lost son—it is about two sons who misunderstood their father in different ways. One was lost in rebellion, the other was lost in religion. The father desired sons, not merely servants. Main Text: Luke 15:11–32 The Father desires sons who know His heart. One son left home to enjoy the world, while the other stayed home but never enjoyed his Father's inheritance. Both misunderstood what it meant to be sons. Most sermons about the prodigal son focus only on the younger son. JESUS, however, ended the parable with the elder brother. Why? Because there are two ways to be far from the Father: 1. By rebellion. 2. By self-righteous service. One son left the house physically. The other never left the house but was emotionally distant. PART ONE The Younger Son—The Believer Who Wants God's Blessings More Than GOD The younger son demanded his inheritance. He wanted the Father's wealth without the Father's presence. Many Christians seek: 1. miracles, 2. prosperity, 3. promotion, 4. marriage, 5. influence, but neglect intimacy with God. He exchanged relationship for pleasure. This is the danger of a worldly mindset. GOD Blesses Both Sons. The father divided his estate between both sons. This is significant. The elder son also received his inheritance. Yet he lived as though he owned nothing. GOD has already blessed many believers with spiritual riches in Christ, yet they live as though they have no inheritance. PART TWO The Elder Son—The Believer Who Serves but Never Enjoys Sonship The elder brother never left home. He was loyal. Faithful. Hardworking. Yet listen to his complaint:

Yet he lived as though he owned nothing. GOD has already blessed many believers with spiritual riches in Christ, yet they live as though they have no inheritance. PART TWO The Elder Son—The Believer Who Serves but Never Enjoys Sonship The elder brother never left home. He was loyal. Faithful. Hardworking. Yet listen to his complaint: "You never gave me even a young goat." The father replied: "Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours." The tragedy was not that the father withheld. The tragedy was that the son never understood what already belonged to him. Many believers work for GOD but never live from their identity as sons. The elder son represents those who remain outwardly faithful but can develop a servant mentality, self-righteousness, or resentment. Servants and Sons Paul speaks of serving willingly in 1 Corinthians 9:17. 1. A servant works for wages. 2. A son serves because he belongs. Service without sonship often produces comparison, bitterness, and exhaustion. Sonship produces joyful obedience. PART THREE There Is Hope for the Prodigal The younger son "came to himself." 1. Repentance begins when a person sees themselves as they truly are. 2. The father did not merely forgive him. He restored him. He gave him: a robe, a ring, sandals, a feast. 3. The younger son represents those who pursue independence from God and later repent God restores identity before He restores assignment. PART FOUR The Danger of the Elder Brother 1. The elder brother was offended by grace. 2. He measured faithfulness by performance. 3. He saw himself as a servant. 4. He called his brother "this son of yours." 5. The father still called him "your brother." Religion divides. But The Father's heart restores. PART FIVE Lessons From the Two Sons The younger son teaches us: 1. Worldliness leads to emptiness. 2. Repentance brings restoration. 3. No one is beyond God's mercy. The elder son teaches us: 1. Faithfulness without intimacy becomes legalism. 2.
