What does “But of that day and hour knoweth no man” really mean? In recent years, disasters, wars, and pestilences have continued to appear. Many Christians actually have a question in their hearts: “Is the Lord coming back soon?” But Jesus said: “But of that day and hour knoweth no man… but my Father only.” Matthew 24:36, KJV So how are we supposed to welcome the Lord? Are we simply supposed to wait without knowing anything? Please listen carefully until the end, and we will see how to prepare for the return of the Lord Jesus. First, the Lord Jesus told us to watch for the signs. Matthew 24:32-33 uses the fig tree as an example: “Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh: So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.” KJV When the branches become tender and put forth leaves, people know that summer is near. In the same way, when the things spoken of in prophecy begin to appear, we should become even more watchful. If we were not meant to know anything, why would the Lord have told us these signs in advance? Second, the Lord repeatedly reminds us to be ready. Matthew 24:44 says: “Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.” KJV The point is not for us to guess the date. It is to remind us: Do not fall asleep. Be ready at all times. Third, the Bible says someone will cry out: “Behold, the bridegroom cometh!” Matthew 25:6 says: “And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.” KJV So the truly important question is not: “Can I calculate in advance exactly which day the Lord will return?” The real question is: “When news about the Lord’s return reaches me, will I seek and examine it, or will I reject it immediately simply because ‘no one knows’?” So, “But of that day and hour knoweth no man” does not mean that we should stop seeking. It reminds us: Do not guess dates. Be watchful. Do not sleep spiritually. Be ready. Do not judge according to imagination. Return to the Bible and examine everything. So then, how should we discern the Lord’s return when it happens? How should we prepare so that we do not miss the opportunity to welcome Him?
