When the storm hit in August 2005 she was in Central City with her kids, taking cover in a neighbor's hallway while the water came up. Her brother got to them in a 2004 Chevy Blazer and drove the children to a cousin's house in Baton Rouge. Then, according to The Advocate in Baton Rouge, seventeen members of that family packed into the Blazer and drove to Texas. The Falcons say the Superdome was their refuge after the storm, and that Perkins was a baby in his mother's arms inside it. Weeks later she went back to see what was left of home.

In April the Atlanta Falcons took him in the sixth round, 215th overall. How he describes it: "Everybody wants the perfect Cinderella story, but it isn't always like that. It isn't always peaches and cream." Be honest. It is one game in October of his rookie year, and a sixth round pick has to prove it again next week. But a baby went out of that city in a Blazer with sixteen other people, and his mother decided she could not bring him back.
