Growing up in Germany, freedom meant something completely different to me. When I was around 18, I made one of the biggest decisions of my life: I left Germany and moved to the US on my own to study psychology. 🇩🇪✈️🇺🇸 Honestly, I think I needed that cut. I loved home, but I also felt like I needed a place where I could start a new chapter without constantly looking backwards. A new country, new people, university, a new routine… and a chance to figure out who Lena actually was when nobody around me already had an old version of me in their head. 🥲🏳️‍⚧️ And hell yeah, I was terrified, but in a positive way 😂 I overthought everything. Whether I’d make friends, whether studying psychology was the right decision, whether I’d feel comfortable as a trans girl so far away from everything familiar. But looking back now, moving was probably one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It taught me that I can build a life somewhere completely new. I can book the flight, figure things out when they go wrong, get lost in a city and eventually find my way back. And now being able to travel like this feels extra special to me. 🌍🤍 There’s something funny about being this little German girl who once left home with way too many thoughts in her head… and now getting to see more and more of the world as the woman she always wanted to become. I’m still an overthinker. I still miss Germany sometimes. And I definitely still call home when life gets confusing. 😅 Sometimes you really do need to step away from the life you know to discover the life that actually feels like yours. And I’m incredibly grateful that I get to experience it all now, traveling, studying, meeting people, making memories… currently traveling with two friends through eastern Europe.
