@navoy.travel: The screen looks like a favour. It is the most expensive button in travel. When a card machine or ATM abroad asks whether you want to pay in your own currency, saying yes lets the machine set the exchange rate instead of your bank. Consumer groups measured what that costs: an average markup of 7.6% over the official rate, up to 12.4% at worst. The Norwegian Consumer Council checked 1,500 withdrawals. Travellers came out ahead in four of them. Four out of 1,500. Spend EUR 1,600 abroad and the difference is about EUR 98, for one extra tap. What to do instead: always pick the local currency. On an ATM that is usually worded as "continue without conversion". Visa's own rules say the machine has to offer you the choice and must not make it for you. One honest catch, because most posts skip it: declining does not make the ATM free. The machine's access fee is charged either way. Use ATMs attached to bank branches, and withdraw less often. Send this to whoever's traveling next. #TravelTips #TravelMoney #TravelHacks #BudgetTravel #Navoy
