Here’s a list of lessons I have learned about UGC in September in no particular order: 1) Editing is a full. Time. Job. I mean OOFT. 2) A lot of apps don’t need portfolios, and you can get opportunities without example videos which is a great way to break into it! 3) 90% of Canvas UGC appears to be for Gen AI apps, which, ew no thank you ma’am 4) Leading on from that, there seems to be huge pressure to use GenAI tools in UGC - clone your voice and likeness, use it to script and edit your videos etc. Again. No thank you ma’am I got into this to build up my creativity! 5) Talking to the camera is a skill that you get a lot better at when you practice. 6) It is so important to have support from others who are at the same stage as you! 7) Slow does not mean bad. You are setting up a business. It won’t happen overnight. The 10K+ first months you see online are an exception, not the rule. 8) Boundaries are so important. Working from your phone means that it’s easy to get lost in it; I started this career to have more time with my daughter, not less. Most importantly, 9) It is SO MUCH FUN! I am having a blast creating, and now that I am starting to create for brands it’s even more enjoyable!
