if hillys mum didn't witness the pie eating then she wouldn't of recommended the book to hilly. hillys mum had respect for the maids and bought the book and read to her fellow residents in the home she was in. which makes me think there was a generation of ladies that were not awful to "the help" i wonder why hilly had a problem and I'm thinking tv and radio in the time this was set influenced her to hate the help. then hilly being the lead mean girl influenced many of the other girls to have the same attitude. also skeeter mum who was in a ladies group was influenced by the other ladies. hillys husband wanted to be a politian. segregation was high in political talks in the 60s.
