The Largest Underground Nuclear Test in U.S. History Nuclear history, Cold War history, U.S. military testing, Alaska, and one of the most powerful underground explosions ever conducted came together on Amchitka Island in 1971. On November 6, 1971, the United States carried out Project Cannikin, an underground nuclear test on the remote Amchitka Island in Alaska’s Aleutian chain. The nuclear device was placed nearly 1.8 kilometers underground before being detonated. With a yield of less than 5 megatons, Cannikin became the largest underground nuclear test ever conducted by the United States. Because the explosion happened deep beneath the surface, there was no giant mushroom cloud like those seen in atmospheric nuclear tests. Instead, the force traveled through the ground, causing the island’s surface to visibly shake and rise. Lakes and ponds moved violently, while cameras recorded the landscape reacting to the massive underground blast. The test was primarily conducted to evaluate the W71 nuclear warhead, which had been developed for the Spartan anti-ballistic missile system during the Cold War. Cannikin was controversial even before it happened. Environmental groups and scientists raised concerns about earthquakes, radiation, and the possible impact on wildlife. Opposition to the test also played an important role in the early history of Greenpeace, whose activists attempted to sail toward Amchitka to protest nuclear testing. More than five decades later, footage of Cannikin remains one of the most dramatic examples of the enormous power hidden beneath an underground nuclear test.
