Manchester United Fall to Controversial Derby Defeat as Pro Ref Admits VAR Error Manchester United were defeated 1-0 by Manchester City at Old Trafford in a dramatic Manchester derby that saw United play against 10 men for around 70 minutes but fail to make their numerical advantage count. Manchester City were reduced to 10 men in the 23rd minute after tempers flared following a United penalty appeal that was waved away. Bruno Fernandes challenged Phil Foden near the far touchline, and the City midfielder went down before kicking out at the United captain in the midriff. Referee Michael Oliver saw the incident and immediately showed Foden a straight red card, leaving City with 10 men for the remainder of the match. Despite having a numerical advantage, United struggled to create clear-cut opportunities, with City defending resolutely and keeping the game goalless until the 60th minute. City eventually found the breakthrough through Haaland’s controversial goal. Pro Ref, formerly known as PGMOL contacted Manchester United after the match and acknowledged that the decision to allow Haaland’s goal was an “error of judgement.” “Following the incident in the 60th minute of Sunday’s Premier League fixture between Manchester United and Manchester City at Old Trafford, we can provide clarification regarding Erling Haaland’s awarded goal. “The on-field decision was offside against Erling Haaland that was checked by VAR and he was found to be in an onside position. “In the same attack, it was established that Enzo Fernández did not play the ball and therefore that makes any offside offence subjective. “However, on this occasion, the VAR did not recognise the likely impact of his position and should have recommended an on-field review.”
