@nora.steele57: A California man was walking home with his wife after their anniversary dinner when a speeding driver slammed into them — leaving him with catastrophic injuries before fleeing the scene. Stanley Isaacs, 60, and his wife were crossing a street in Laguna Beach shortly after 9:30 p.m. on Aug. 11, 2022, when Sysillia Kianna Morrison Montes De Oca, then 18, struck them while driving a Volkswagen Jetta. Isaacs was later pronounced d3ad, while his wife survived with injuries. Montes De Oca did not stop and continued driving away. According to courtroom reporting, Isaacs suffered an internal decapitation, skull fracture, spinal injuries and severely damaged ribs. Prosecutors described the crash as far more than an ordinary mistake. After the collision, Montes De Oca reportedly searched online for news about fatal hit-and-run crashes. She also allegedly returned to the scene but did not turn herself in. Prosecutors said she had used marijuana earlier that day and reportedly told others in the car that she was speeding up shortly before the crash. Investigators eventually learned that a friend had helped hide the vehicle. Montes De Oca surrendered to police roughly two weeks later. Her defense attorney argued that she panicked after the crash and left because of pressure from friends. The defense also pointed out that she eventually turned herself in and said the exact speed of the vehicle was never established. Montes De Oca was convicted of gross vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run causing serious injury and failing to stop after a hit-and-run. She is scheduled to be sentenced on Nov. 13. Isaacs’ family remembers him as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and son. His stepdaughter described him as someone whose gracious smile brought joy to everyone around him.
