@abdimarihotmarbun: For centuries, Milan has used this extraordinary "cloud" to reach one of its most precious relics: the Holy Nail, traditionally believed to be one of the nails used in the Crucifixion of Christ. The relic has been kept in the Duomo since 1461, high above the altar. But the devotion surrounding it was especially renewed by St. Charles Borromeo, Archbishop of Milan from 1564-1584. During the plague of 1576, St. Charles carried the Holy Nail through the streets of Milan in a penitential procession, praying for an end to the epidemic. He also inaugurated the Rite of the Nivola, in which the Archbishop is lifted more than 40 meters into the vault to retrieve the relic. The Holy Nail (il Santo Chiodo) is then placed in its reliquary and carried back down in the Nivola, before being exposed for the faithful. A remarkable Milanese tradition-and a reminder of how St. Charles placed the Passion of Christ at the heart of his ministry.
