I feel like people are reading so much bad faith into John's words. He fronted himself like he hated Hal his whole life but it's clear John had mad respect for him. It's why the crushing reality of Hal's suicidal ideation, lack of forethought into civilian casualties, and need to keep the ring allows him to say this. John realizes how different Hal is, and the Halogram proves it. Hal isn't not saving anyone, it's more suble than that. Young Hal's optimism and desire to do good solely for the sake of good is just gone, and replaced with his only identity being the ring.

its crazy how John even after doing all of that, still didnt take the ring. It really shows how the whole "John having the ring" was more for the parents wanting it and the guardian needing it, more than for John himself. He never had a personal reason to get the ring other than following orders from his parents, because "It was his destiny". He understood that the ring must be earned properly, not taken by force. He felt empty wearing the ring cause he never really wanted it

Seriously a disappointment! This show could have ended with John given Hal back his ring and charging it up. Then saying I don’t want the ring because I dont want to become you! I actually like Hal’s character in this show.
