At independence in 1960, the country had three regions—Northern, Western and Eastern—plus the Federal Territory of Lagos. Over the following decades, successive governments divided the regions into smaller states. The major stages 1967 — 12 states General Yakubu Gowon abolished the four-region structure and created 12 states. This happened shortly before the Nigerian Civil War. 1976 — 19 states General Murtala Mohammed created 7 additional states, bringing the total to 19. For example, Niger State was created from the former North-Western State. 1987 — 21 states General Ibrahim Babangida created 2 more states. 1991 — 30 states Babangida created 9 additional states, bringing the number to 30. 1996 — 36 states General Sani Abacha created 6 more states, producing the 36-state structure Nigeria has today.
