@lilyewen_: We need more role models who make women ask “what could my body DO?” before they ask “what should my body LOOK like?” And that’s exactly why the Sydney ad bothered me. Not because women can’t be sexy and not because there’s anything wrong with showing your body. But because women, especially women in sport, have spent long enough being taught that how our bodies look is somehow more important than what they’re capable of. And the reality is, that pressure already exists everywhere!!!! 73% of elite female athletes in one study said they felt pressure from their sport to change their appearance to fit gender ideals. In a study of elite female cyclists, around 70% said they’d been pressured to lose weight. And research in female collegiate athletes competing in weight sensitive sports found 55% wanted to lose weight. Meanwhile these are bodies that run, lift, jump, sprint, climb, compete, recover and achieve ridiculous things!! THAT is what I want young girls growing up seeing, I want them looking at female athletes and thinking
“I want to see how strong I can get.”
“I wonder how fast I could run.”
“I wonder what my body could be capable of.” Not immediately wondering whether their stomach is flat enough or their body is attractive enough. There is absolutely space for women to feel sexy AND powerful. But sport should be one of the places where we celebrate women for what their bodies can do, not reduce them back down to how desirable they look while doing it.
