The moment someone sees a tic attack happening, the instinct is almost always to do something, say something reassuring, offer a hand, ask if they're okay, anything that makes the moment feel less helpless for everyone watching. Most of that instinct, however kind, ends up working against the person in the middle of it, telling someone to calm down or just stop doesn't switch a tic attack off because there was never a switch to begin with, and hurrying that process along usually makes it longer, not shorter. What actually helps is far less dramatic than people expect, staying calm yourself, giving the person space and quiet instead of a crowd of questions, and asking what they need rather than guessing on their behalf, because it looks different for every single person going through it. Once it's passed, it also means not rushing them straight back into whatever was happening before, because a tic attack can leave someone properly drained even once it's stopped. None of that requires you to fix anything, it just requires you to stay steady while someone else's nervous system does what it needs to do. Has anyone ever helped you through a tic attack and if so what works for you? 🩵 #dislabeled #neurodiversity #mentalhealthmatters
